Early in the 1980’s, Mike Powell and Glen Hillyer began running together from the Ann Oliver Dancing School/Theatre, while waiting for their daughters to complete dance lessons on Monday and Friday evenings. They were then joined by Mike Powell’s 14 year old son, Steve.
By 1983/84 the 3 runners had been joined by Kirk Warsop (Ann Oliver’s stepson), Bip Patel, Mark Marshall, Chuck Shuttlewood, Rex Bell, Deryk Woods and Paul Reed. The dance venue was in Leicester town centre, so most Monday runs were down the canal/river towards Aylestone Locks, and the Friday runs shorter to Victoria Park and back. These runners entered various races and were collectively known as “ANN OLIVER RUNNERS”.
1985
In May 1985, they applied to the AAA for affiliation, as “OLIVER INTERNATIONAL RUNNING CLUB”. After several forms and letters affiliation to the L&RAA was formally accepted. The club colours of Red, White and Royal Blue horizontal stripes on a White Vest were initially rejected as being too similar to the English National colours! After appealing to the National AAA it was agreed that there was little chance of a clash and the colours were accepted.
The first committee was made up of Mike – Chairman, Deryk – Secretary, Rex – Treasurer, and 3 committee members Glen, Paul and Chuck.
The Midlands AAA wrote and challenged the use of the word “International” in our club name. We had to reluctantly change our name to “OLIVER RUNNING CLUB”.
In September, we were accepted into the North Mids., Cross-Country League, running 2 races that year. What a shock to the system, the standard was so high that our 4 fastest runners finished in the last 50 of a field of 400. Before the end of the year, Pete Merrill had joined us and ran in these races, with Steve Powell competing in the Youth League.
Other members joining us in that first year were – Gav. Lane, Tony Preston, Stephen Taylor, Tony Hollands and Graham Jennings.
