RESULTS and PHOTOS

When I got out of bed at 08:30 it was grey and dreary outside, but as I drank my coffee (caffeine injection) the weather worsened and it started to tip it down, once I saw this I thought that most will bottle it and stay at home. But as I drove nearer to Birstall the rain stopped, the clouds drew back and at 10:00 we were bathed in glorious sunshine. There were 16 runners turned out for the event, and the array of bikes ranged from carbon fibre framed racers to good solid steel mountain bikes. As usual prior to the race there was a lot of banter regarding the run and bike courses, which had to be explained to many several times. I also had to contend with one or two participants who were not quite happy with their handicap times and were trying to explain to me why I should give them a couple more favourable minutes. In one ear out the other!! Angie set off first on scratch with a 9 minute lead over Newt and Dekker and 29 minutes in front of Neil. As far as I was concerned the race unfolded by Blacky, Marc, Dave and Boyo passing me on the first run, but this not dismay me as I knew I could catch them on the bike. The bike course this time had changed to two laps going out through Birstall, Wanlip, Fillingate, A6, Sibson Road and round again, which is about 8.2 miles. The change over went quite smoothly, some runners changing shoes to cycle others not bothering, also one runner donned a windproof jacket, must have cost him all of two minutes. However on the bike I only managed to catch Blacky and Chezza so with the quicker boys on front of me I knew my race was done. After the bike ride there were many bad experiences in getting the right muscles to work for running, after 8 miles on a bike and trying to run is not an easy task. But on the second run there was a lot of gritting teeth as the quicker runners could see the not so quick in front, for me at this stage I was passed by everyman and his dog. On finishing I was informed that Lee had won the race by a good 3 minutes in front of Kev and 3rd was Angie. Well done guys and gal. But questions must be asked about young Lee, ok he turns up for training but usually takes the easy option with Newt, this year he had participated in three races and his times are around 8 to 9 minute mile pace, but today his total running time for a distance of approx 10k was 47:35 not bad considering he did 51:23 at Stilton. I think with a little bit of nurturing by our training guru, he has a lot more to offer. Thanks very much for all who competed, thanks to Gib for his timekeeping.

Next RBR April 2007.
