NEW TO RUNNING
- HOW ABOUT SOME RACES?
THE BEGINNERS GUIDE TO THE WINTER LEAGUE
The Leicestershire Road Racing
League hold races throughout the winter, first one in January, which are
only for Leicestershire clubs. They are an ideal way to start running
competitively as they are short races (around 6 miles), quite low key
and very friendly with over 300 club runners. more.....

LESLEY GRIFFIN
AND THE UNWANTED KISS
On the Monday after the Barrow League race, Lesley cycled to work as usual
between Rothley and Loughborough. She uses cycle lanes as and when possible
and never goes particularly fast and therefore thought a helmet wasn’t
essential. On this particular day, the traffic had stopped at some lights
and Lesley was pedalling down the cycle lane on their left. One kind driver
let an oncoming car turn across into his driveway, sadly right in front
of Lesley. Lesley’s brakes worked too well and she pitched over the bars
into the path of the oncoming car, luckily his brakes worked well too
and he avoided running over anything. When she tried to get up, she wondered
why it was difficult until she realised the car was over the top of her.
The main injuries were to her knee and face as she kissed the tarmac,
needing 10 stitches above the eye. The treatment also involved removing
loads of grit so she wouldn’t look like Desperate Dan. Wisely, Lesley
has now bought a helmet and is already cycling again! Hope the scars and
the bruises heal quickly.
THE IMPORTANCE
OF HELMETS
Chris Mawer had a nasty cycling accident two years ago and is still suffering
now because of it, luckily she was wearing a helmet. She told me about
John Smith who belonged to the tri club and used to insist on everybody
wearing a helmet. One day he was casually warming up doing about five
mph on a quiet bit of road, looking down to check his gears were ok, he
caught the curb, fell off and hit his head. This was the one time he was
not wearing a helmet! He remained in a coma until his wife made the heart
wrenching decision to turn the life support machine off.

REGGAE MARATHON
On the 3rd of December, I ran my hardest race ever. After over 20 years
of running, the Reggae marathon was the toughest. The race started at
5.15 am and even then the temperature was over 80 degrees! The humidity
was stifling, just breathing was an effort. The race set off in pitch

HOLIDAY HALF MARATHON
No.3
Having been to the same area of
France for the past three years we again went to La Tranche-sur-mer in
the Southern Vendee. We knew that it was unlikely that we would be able
to resist the opportunity to run in the half marathon, and as this year
it didn’t coincide with our last night away the decision was made easy.

CLUB TRIP 2005
2005 Club Trip to Weston-super-Mare
The coach departed Birstall at 06:30 prompt with 31 club members on board.
As usual the pre-race, non-alcohol fuelled banter was rather subdued.
The Trip virgins on board the coach, Nick, Marc, Ian, Liz, Ken and Pete
sat silently in anticipation mulling over stories of past trips that had
been told on previous club nights. more.....
