LRRL 1 - Barrow 6 The opening race of the Glen Hillyer Club Championship drew an impressive turnout of 48 Birstall runners. Everyone seemed focused for the race, with individual rivalries helping the adrenalin flow even more. The individual performances from most of the Birstall men were very good, with our first runner home leading by example. Neil took 14th place overall, with a time of 34.20 - over a minute and a half faster than last year! Could this be due to the pain of Wednesday nights' speedwork session? Well similar improvements could be seen in the results of other speedwork masochists. Dave broke 40 minutes for 6 miles for the first time in 15 years (and beat Julian into the bargain); Nick broke his PB for the course (and maybe even the distance) by running sub-7's; both Powelly and Jimbo took over a minute off their time for last year. Other good runs that stood out among many for the men were from Rambo Rimmer and newboy Nilesh, coming 5th and 8th counter respectively. Yet again the ladies of Birstall did the club proud, with Birstall A taking 3rd team place and Birstall B coming 16th out of 28 teams. First home for the ladies was Sue Black, followed by Kat - both of whom had unknowingly improved by over half a minute on last year. However the most noticeable improvements were from the newer Birstall ladies, who have all moved up from the run walk group. Caroline and Chris Cobley both took over 2 minutes off their time, and Angie took over six minutes off hers. However it was Alison who has made the most progress, and deservedly took runner of the day by shaving almost 8 minutes off her previous time!! So from the sublime, to the ridiculous. In other words the 'Donkey'. There were a few runners in contention for this award. Alan Lee managed to escape the disgrace somehow, and Salvadore had only just given it back, which left Chezza as the clear winner!! He was a minute slower than last year - shame! The next league race is Ashby, were hopefully the improvements will continue (or start in Chezza's case), but don't forget the cross country in the meantime. You need to do it, or the very last one, to keep counting for the Club Championship.
